Arrigo and I were in a race called World Cup this past weekend at Hawrelak Park. There were a couple of distances we could have raced, but we chose to do the sprint distance - 750-metre swim, 20-km bike, and a 5-km run. I figured that with my sporadic (AKA next to non-existent) training regime, I could do this distance; afterall, I have done seven Ironmen. I was quickley reminded though of why training is important - this distance was hard. I was painfully reminded that doing a shorter distance race requires all-out exertion - for all three disciplines. I did it though. It really tests your cardiovascular capacity.
Arrigo and I qualified for the world championships in Edmonton next year; we both came in 7th place in our age category. I guess now that we qualified, we will have to do that thing called training.
It isn't cheap to be on Team Canada - first, we each have to pay about $825 which includes being a member of Triathlon Canada, our team uniform (with our name on our jersey and shorts), and registration for next year's race. Who knows what other expenses there may be, but we get to represent our country on home soil with - and let's not forget, representing our country with our names on the bum of our cycling shorts. We're both excited.
